Being a leader in an F&B operation is unique. You probably recognize the challenge of not being able to gather all employees for a meeting, and that many in your teams speak different languages. Many also work irregular hours, perhaps only twice a month. This makes communication extra difficult. 

Successful communication is the key to successful leadership. Below are some tips that can increase your chances of success.

One of the most crucial aspects of being an effective F&B leader is to constantly communicate with your employees. 

Psychological Safety in the Team

Have you experienced a situation where an employee didn’t dare to take reasonable initiatives in their role and instead acted passively and evasively? This may be due to the lack of fundamental psychological safety between you and the employee. Psychological safety is a feeling of being able to share ideas and ask questions without fear of negative consequences, and it is built through open and regular dialogue. When your employees know that you as a leader listen, care, and communicate regularly, a culture is created where they feel valued and heard.

Clear Communication and Clear Goals

By clearly conveying which goals are prioritized and what behaviors are expected, you help your employees navigate their work. They know what is required and can feel confident that they are moving in the right direction. This clarity reduces uncertainty, which in turn reduces stress and the risk of burnout.
